There's nothing more frustrating than a laptop that takes forever to do anything. Whether it's grinding to a halt when you open a browser, freezing mid-task, or taking five minutes to start up — a slow laptop is one of the most common tech complaints we hear at Bytova.
The good news? Most of the time, it's fixable. Here are the five most common causes of a slow laptop, and what you can do about each one.
1. Too Many Programs Starting Up Automatically
Every time you turn on your laptop, a queue of apps tries to launch in the background — Spotify, OneDrive, Teams, Zoom, and more. Each one eats into your memory and processing power before you've even opened a browser.
Fix it: On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click the Startup tab, and disable anything you don't need at startup. On a Mac, go to System Settings > General > Login Items and remove the extras.
2. Not Enough Free Storage Space
When your hard drive or SSD is nearly full, your laptop struggles. Windows and macOS both need free space to run smoothly — as a rule of thumb, try to keep at least 10–15% of your drive free.
Fix it: Delete files you no longer need, empty the Recycle Bin, and move photos or documents to an external drive or cloud storage like OneDrive or Google Drive. On Windows, use the built-in Storage Sense tool to find what's taking up space.
3. Too Many Browser Tabs and Extensions
Browsers are memory-hungry at the best of times. If you regularly have 20+ tabs open and a handful of extensions running, your laptop is working overtime just to keep up.
Fix it: Close tabs you're not actively using. Review your browser extensions and remove any you don't recognise or rarely use. Consider using a tab manager extension if you genuinely need lots of tabs open.
4. Malware or Unwanted Software
Viruses, adware, and other unwanted software can silently run in the background, consuming resources and slowing everything down. Sometimes the only sign is a laptop that's inexplicably sluggish.
Fix it: Run a full scan with Windows Defender (built into Windows 10 and 11) or Malwarebytes (free version available). If you're seeing pop-up ads, browser redirects, or your homepage has changed without your permission, that's a strong sign something unwanted is installed.
If you're not sure what you're looking at, Bytova's Virus, Adware & Browser Clean-Up service can sort it safely and remotely.
5. An Ageing or Overheating Machine
Laptops slow down as they age — especially if the thermal paste on the processor has dried out, the fan vents are clogged with dust, or the battery is degrading. Older hardware simply can't keep up with modern software demands.
Fix it: Make sure the vents on the bottom and sides of your laptop aren't blocked. Use a can of compressed air to blow out dust from the vents every 6–12 months. If your laptop is more than 5–6 years old and still running slowly after a clean-up, it may be time to consider an upgrade — and Bytova's Computer Buying Advice service can help you choose the right replacement without overspending.
Still Slow After Trying All of This?
