You don't need to spend a fortune to keep your computer safe. There are some excellent free security tools available that do a genuinely good job of protecting your PC from viruses, hackers and scammers. Here are the five I recommend to every customer.
1. Windows Defender (Built-in — Free)
If you're running Windows 10 or 11, you already have Windows Defender installed. It's Microsoft's built-in antivirus and it's actually very good these days — good enough for most home users. Make sure it's turned on and kept up to date.
Where to find it: Search for "Windows Security" in the Start menu.
2. Malwarebytes Free
Malwarebytes is brilliant for catching things that traditional antivirus misses — particularly adware, spyware and potentially unwanted programmes (PUPs). The free version lets you run manual scans whenever you want.
Where to get it: malwarebytes.com — always download from the official site.
3. Bitwarden (Password Manager)
Using the same password for multiple accounts is one of the biggest security risks most people take. Bitwarden is a free, open-source password manager that stores all your passwords securely and generates strong unique passwords for every site.
Where to get it: bitwarden.com — available as a browser extension and mobile app.
4. uBlock Origin (Ad & Tracker Blocker)
Many malicious websites use adverts to deliver malware — a technique called "malvertising". uBlock Origin is a free browser extension that blocks ads and trackers, making your browsing significantly safer as well as faster.
Where to get it: Available free on the Chrome, Firefox and Edge extension stores.
5. Have I Been Pwned
This free website lets you check whether your email address has appeared in any known data breaches. If your email shows up, it means your details (including possibly your password) may have been exposed and you should change your passwords immediately.
