Remote IT Support: What It Is and How It Works

A lot of people are surprised when I tell them I can fix their computer without ever visiting their home. Remote IT support sounds technical or complicated, but it's actually very straightforward — and in most cases, it's faster and more convenient than waiting for someone to come to you.

Here's everything you need to know.

What Is Remote IT Support?

Remote IT support means I connect to your computer over the internet and can see and control your screen — with your permission — to diagnose and fix problems. It's like having a tech expert sitting right next to you, without them needing to leave their desk.

How Does It Work?

The process is simple:

  1. You get in touch and describe the problem
  2. I send you a link to download a small, safe remote access programme
  3. You run it and share a code with me
  4. I connect to your computer and get to work
  5. You can watch everything I do on your screen in real time
  6. When I'm done, the connection closes and I have no further access

The whole process typically takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the issue.

Is It Safe?

Yes — as long as you're using a trusted technician. I use industry-standard remote access software, and the connection only exists while we're actively working together. You can end the session at any time by closing the programme. I never have access to your computer without your knowledge and consent.

The key is to only ever allow remote access to someone you've contacted yourself — never give access to anyone who calls you out of the blue claiming to be from Microsoft, BT or your bank. That's a scam.

What Can Be Fixed Remotely?

Most common computer problems can be resolved remotely, including:

  • Slow performance and startup issues
  • Virus and malware removal
  • Software installation and setup
  • Email configuration
  • Wi-Fi and internet troubleshooting
  • Windows updates and errors
  • Printer setup
  • Browser issues

What Can't Be Fixed Remotely?

Hardware problems — like a broken screen, faulty keyboard, or failed hard drive — need physical attention. If that's the case, I'll let you know straight away and advise on the best next step.
