How to Set Up a Smart Home Device Safely

Smart speakers, smart plugs, and connected devices like Alexa and Google Home are increasingly popular — and for good reason. Once set up correctly, they can make everyday tasks genuinely easier. But the setup process can be confusing, and a poorly configured device can create security risks on your home network.

Here is a straightforward guide to setting up a smart home device safely.

Before you start

Check your Wi-Fi

Most smart home devices connect to your home Wi-Fi. Make sure you know your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password before you begin. Most devices only support 2.4GHz networks — if your router broadcasts separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, connect to the 2.4GHz one during setup.

Download the correct app

Every smart device has an official companion app. Download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store only — not from a link in a box or a third-party website. Common apps include:

  • Amazon Alexa — for Echo devices
  • Google Home — for Nest and Google devices
  • TP-Link Tapo — for Tapo smart plugs and cameras

Setting up the device

  1. Plug in the device and wait for it to enter setup mode (usually indicated by a flashing light).
  2. Open the companion app and follow the on-screen instructions to add a new device.
  3. When prompted, connect to your home Wi-Fi network using your password.
  4. Give the device a clear name — for example “Living Room Lamp” rather than the default name.
  5. Complete any firmware update the app recommends before using the device.

Keeping your smart devices secure

  • Use a strong, unique password for the account linked to your smart device (Alexa, Google, or Tapo account).
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your account where available.
  • Keep firmware updated. Most apps will notify you when an update is available — install these promptly.
  • Consider a guest network. Many modern routers allow you to create a separate Wi-Fi network for smart devices, keeping them isolated from your main computers and phones.
  • Remove devices you no longer use from your account and perform a factory reset before disposing of them.
