Your computer won't just stop working one day without warning. In my experience helping hundreds of people with their tech, there are almost always signs beforehand. The problem is, most people don't know what to look for.
Here are the 5 most common warning signs — and what to do if you spot them.
1. It's Running Much Slower Than Usual
If your computer has become noticeably slower over the past few weeks, it could be a sign of a failing hard drive, too many background programmes, or even malware. Don't ignore it — gradual slowdown is one of the earliest warning signs.
What to do: Run a full virus scan, check your startup programmes, and if it continues, get it checked by a professional.
2. It's Making Strange Clicking or Grinding Noises
This is one of the most serious signs. Clicking or grinding from inside your computer usually means your hard drive is starting to fail. Hard drives store all your photos, documents and data — if this one goes, you could lose everything.
What to do: Back up your files immediately and get the drive tested. Don't delay on this one.
3. It's Overheating or Shutting Down Randomly
If your computer is getting very hot to the touch, or keeps shutting itself down without warning, the cooling system may be failing or the vents may be blocked with dust.
What to do: Make sure vents aren't blocked, and consider having the internals cleaned. Overheating can permanently damage components.
4. You're Seeing More Errors and Crashes Than Usual
Frequent blue screens (on Windows), error messages, or programmes crashing repeatedly are signs something is wrong — either with the software, the hard drive, or the RAM.
What to do: Note down any error codes you see and search for them, or get in touch and I'll help diagnose the issue remotely.
5. It Takes Forever to Start Up
If your computer takes 5+ minutes to reach the desktop and be usable, something isn't right. This can be caused by too many startup programmes, a dying hard drive, or insufficient memory.
What to do: Check your startup programmes in Task Manager, and consider upgrading to an SSD if you're still running an old hard drive.
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
